What is Radon?
According to the CDC, breathing in high levels of radon over time can cause lung cancer. Radon is the second most common cause of lung cancer, behind smoking. Radon is a naturally occurring gas formed by the breakdown of uranium in rock and soil. It seeps in underneath structures through tiny holes or cracks in the foundation where it becomes trapped inside. Because it is odorless and colorless, it isn’t easily detected by smell or look, making it impossible to know if it’s rising to dangerous levels in the home. Protect Your Family From Radon today by having one of our certified Radon technicians test your home.

GET INFORMED
The national indoor Radon level is 1.3 pCi/L. Over 50% of homes in St. Charles test higher for the level of Radon in the home.

GIVE YOURSELF PEACE OF MIND
Just like annual maintenance on your homes systems, testing your home for radon can have a big impact on your family’s overall health and comfort.
How People are Exposed to Radon
People are most commonly exposed to radon indoors. Radon gas enters a home through cracks in the floors or walls, construction joints, gaps in the foundation around pipes, wires or pumps. Radon levels are typically the highest in the lowest level of your home since it is the closest to soil and rocks.
How Radon Testing Works
With radon being the #2 cause of lung cancer, behind cigarettes, it’s incredibly important to know if your family is being exposed to high levels of radon gas. Proactively testing for radon at least once per year can give you peace of mind.
- Place test kit in the basement at least 20 inches off the ground and at least 3 inches from any windows, exterior walls, or entryways, avoiding drafts
- Let the device run for 48 hours unplugged
- The device will read the current radon level as well as record the highest levels that it detects over the course of the testing period
When to Test Your Home
- If it’s never been tested or radon levels are unknown
- When preparing to buy or sell a home
- Before and after any renovations, especially after making any repairs to reduce radon levels
- Before making any lifestyle changes in the home that would cause someone to spend more time in the basement or lower level (like converting a basement to a bedroom)
Radon concentration in air is measured in units of picoCuries per Liter (pCi/L) or Becquerels per cubic meter (Bq/m3). The Missouri Department of Health and the EPA use 4 pCi/L as a recommended action level. When testing indicates that the radon level in the lowest primary living area of the home is at or above this action level, they recommend that the homeowner take corrective action.
The Solution
To alleviate higher levels of radon from entering the home, a radon mitigation kit can be installed. A hole is drilled through the concrete slab where the radon sits in the dirt and gravel underneath the home. A PVC vent pipe is placed over the hole and runs through the foundation to the outside where a fan pulls the gas from under the home to be vented outside, above the roof. After the mitigation device has been installed, the home must be re-tested to ensure that radon levels have dropped.
