Water Softener Overview

A Water Softener is a filtration system that works to remove high concentrations of calcium and magnesium that cause hard water within your home. When water flows through a Water Softener, the system works to filter out these hard water minerals and the now softened water leaves the water softening system to flow through your home’s plumbing.

How Water Softeners Work

Water is referred to as “hard water” when it contains a lot of minerals. Water softening is the removal of calcium, magnesium, chlorine and other anions in your water. The resulting soft water is more compatible with soap and extends the lifetime of plumbing fixtures.

Benefits of a Water Softener

    • Use Less Detergent: Soft water will have your clothes come out brighter, while also using less detergent and other laundry products.
    • Your Dishwasher Benefits Too: Soft water cleans everything—even your dishes! With a water softener, you won’t need as much dish soap and your dishes will come out streak free.
    • Protect Your Water Appliances: With less scum and scale building up, your faucets, showers and toilets will last much longer. This alone can pay for the water softener.
    • Healthier Skin and hair: Hard water dries out and forms a layer of film on your skin and hair that can cause potential health risks.
    • Save on Energy Costs: Without a water softener, minerals will eventually build up in your water heater and create a barrier causing your water heater to run less efficiently. A water softener can save you up to 30% on your energy bill.

Ideal Water Hardness

In simple terms the “hardness” of water is the amount of dissolved calcium and magnesium in the water. Hard water is high in these dissolved minerals.

  • 0–3: If your hard water test strip indicates that your water is between 0–3 grains per gallon, your water doesn’t require softening.
  • 3–7: Water between 3–7 gpg is moderately hard, causing spotty dishes and dry skin.
  • 7–11: Hard water is packed with minerals at 7–11 gpg, and you likely deal with crusty faucets and pipes and possibly reddish rings on your porcelain from excess iron.
  • 11–15: Considered very hard, water at 11–15 gpg exhibits all the signs of hard water all the time.
  • 15+: Extremely hard water is anything over 15 gpg.
