When to Replace
Avoid being without hot water for any length of time. Stay ahead of any potential issues and protect your family’s comfort by replacing your unit before it goes out. Here are a few things to look out for. If you are expierencing any of the issues listed below, it may be time to replace your water heater:
AGE: Water heater manufacturers give water heaters a typical lifespan of 8-10 years, with proper maintenance. However, without annual water heater inspections your water heater could go out much sooner.
RUSTY VALVE/INTAKE: Seeing rust around the pressure valve (or sometimes called the T&P valve) means that you most likely already have rust spreading to other parts of the water heater. Rust is caused by age and leaking water.
RUSTY WATER: This could indicate you have rust within the tank of your water heater and you need a bucket test to determine. A bucket test will drain several buckets of water from the tank and if after the third bucket you are still seeing rust within the water, it means your tank does indeed have rust.
NOISE: Noise can be caused by a buildup of sediment within your tank. With a lack of maintenance, sediment will build up on the bottom of your tank. This will make it harder for your water heater to heat the incoming water. Over time, it will cause your unit to become less efficient and can cause the bottom of the tank to wear out.
LEAKING WATER: Leaking water is the most common sign that your water heater is ready to be replaced. Rust on the tank or lack of proper installations, like having an expansion tank, can cause water to begin to leak from the T&P or even the tank itself.
