How Water Softeners Work
A water softener is a filtration system designed to remove high concentrations of calcium and magnesium that cause hard water within your home. When water flows through a water softener, the system filters out these hard water minerals, and the now-softened water moves on to flow through your home’s plumbing.

Do You Need a Water Softener?
If your home has moderately to extremely hard water, it is in your best interest to install a water softener. It’s important to emphasize the impact of hard water on household appliances, plumbing, and even personal health. Hard water can lead to mineral build-up in pipes and fixtures, reducing water flow efficiency and causing premature wear on appliances like dishwashers and water heaters.
Ideal Water Hardness
In simple terms, the “hardness” of water is the amount of dissolved calcium and magnesium in the water. Hard water has a high level of these dissolved minerals. You can purchase many easy-to-use water hardness tests online to measure the approximate amount of minerals in your home’s water supply.
Once you’ve tested your water and determined the number of grains per gallon, consult the below:
- 0–3. If your hard water test strip indicates that your water is between 0 to 3 grains per gallon, your water doesn’t require softening.
- 3–7. Water between 3 to 7 grains per gallon is moderately hard. It can cause spotty dishes and dry skin.
- 7–11. Hard water is packed with minerals at 7 to 11 grains per gallon. You are likely dealing with crusty faucets and pipes and possibly reddish rings on your porcelain from excess iron.
- 11–15. Water with 11 to 15 grains per gallon is considered very hard and will likely exhibit all the signs of hard water on a frequent basis.
- 15+. Water with over 15 grains per gallon is considered extremely hard.

Benefits of a Water Softener
Without a water softener, you may experience issues like soap scum in sinks and bathtubs, dull laundry, and dry skin or hair, as soaps and detergents do not lather as effectively in hard water. Over time, the accumulation of scale can even lead to damage that warrants costly appliance repairs or replacements.
Some of the potential benefits of installing a water softener include:
- Less detergent required. Soft water should make clothes coming out of the laundry brighter. You will generally need to use less detergent and other laundry products to achieve thorough cleaning.
- Enhanced dishwasher performance. Soft water cleans everything – even your dishes! With a water softener, you generally won’t need as much dish soap, and your dishes should come out streak-free.
- Water appliance protection. With less scum and scale building up, your faucets, showers, and toilets should last much longer. The savings on avoiding premature repairs or replacements alone can pay for the water softener.
- Healthier skin and hair. Hard water dries out and can form an unpleasant layer of film on your skin and hair after bathing. The minerals in hard water can eventually irritate your skin and harm your hair.
- Save on energy costs. Without a water softener, minerals can eventually build up in your water heater and create a barrier, causing your unit to run less efficiently. A water softener can save you up to 30% on your energy bill.
